At the beginning, Mount Rinjani National Park is an area Sanctuary Wildlife established by the Governor of the Dutch East Indies in 1941 based on Decree no. 15 Staatblaat No. 77 dated March 12, 1941, then announced through the Statement of the Minister of Forestry no. 448/Menhut-VI/1990, at the 3rd National Nature Conservation Week in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara province and designated as Mount Rinjani National Park with Minister of Forestry Decree no. 280/Kpts-VI/1997 dated May 27, 1997, by the name of Mount Rinjani National Park Unit echelon IV.A, then in 2002 changed to Mount Rinjani National Park echelon III.A with the Minister of Forestry Decree no. 6186/Kpts-II/2002 June 10, 2002 on the Organization and Administration of Mount Rinjani National Park.
Later in the year 2007, based on the Decree of the Minister of Forestry Number P.03/Menhut-II/2007 February 1, 2007 on the Organization and Administration of Technical Implementation Unit of the National Park, Mount Rinjani National Park is included in type B.
Based on the decree of Mount Rinjani National Park is divided into two (2) National Parks Management Section:
- National Park Management Section Area I West Lombok : Addressing the National Park located in West Lombok district with area ± 12357.67 ha (30%) who were divided into 3 (three) Resort and several Watching Post.
- National Park Management Section II of East Lombok : Addressing the National Park located in 2 (two) districts in East Lombok regency of ± 22152.88 ha (53%), while the National Park area in Central Lombok District of ± 6189.45 Ha (17%) divided into 6 (six), resorts and several Watching Post.
